Chaffee County created and implemented a series of rules and regulations for short term rentals in the county. Buena Vista, Salida, and Poncha Springs regulate STRs within their own town boundaries. The Chaffee County STR Rules and Regulations apply to properties in unincorporated Chaffee County.
Here are a few important Chaffee County STR rules to be aware of:
- There shall be a maximum of three hundred ten (310) short-term rental licenses available per year. A license does not transfer with the sale of a property.
- Residents who live in Chaffee County are always prioritized over out-of-county residents on the STR application waitlist. A Chaffee County resident will get bumped ahead of any out-of-county residents on the waitlist.
- UPDATE ON ADUs: Accessory Dwelling Units are eligible for a STR permit. Only one STR permit per property; either the primary residence or ADU can apply for a short term rental license, but not both properties.
- STR occupancies in properties with a septic system shall be limited to two people per bedroom.
You can reach out to Chaffee County Planner Brandon Wolff with STR license questions and to get the application.
